Transmission repair

Transmission Repair in Calgary

A slipping or hard-shifting transmission doesn't automatically mean a new transmission. We diagnose it properly first and tell you where you stand.

Quick answer

Common transmission warning signs are slipping, delayed engagement into drive or reverse, harsh or late shifts, shuddering, a burning smell and red fluid under the car. Some causes are minor, like low fluid, a sensor or a software issue. Others mean internal wear. Our Calgary shop diagnoses the cause first and gives you honest repair options with a free quote.

Few repair words worry people more than transmission. The fear makes sense, because a full replacement is expensive. But plenty of transmission complaints come down to something smaller, and you won't know which kind you have until someone checks it properly.

That's how we handle transmission repair at our NE Calgary shop: diagnosis first, then honest advice on whether to repair or replace. We work on all makes and models, and you get a free quote and a straight explanation before any work starts.

Warning signs to watch for

Automatic transmissions usually give you some warning before they fail. Catching it early keeps your options open.

  • Slipping: the engine revs up but the car doesn't accelerate to match, as if it briefly went into neutral
  • Delayed engagement: a pause of a second or more after you shift into drive or reverse before the car moves
  • Harsh, late or erratic shifts, or a thump when it changes gear
  • Shudder at steady speed, often felt around 50 to 80 km/h, which can point to the torque converter
  • Whining or humming that changes with speed
  • A burning smell, or red or brown fluid spots under the car
  • A check engine or transmission warning light, sometimes with the car stuck in one gear (limp mode)

Cold weather and your transmission

Transmission fluid thickens in the cold. On a -30 morning, many automatics shift late and feel sluggish until they warm up, which is normal. What isn't normal is a long delay going into gear, slipping that doesn't go away once the car is warm, or shifts that get worse over a few weeks. Those are worth a look before the weather gets worse.

Towing, stop-and-go traffic and lots of short winter trips are all hard on transmission fluid. If you do a lot of any of them, follow the severe service interval in your owner's manual.

What diagnosis looks like

We scan the transmission control module for codes, check fluid level and condition where the transmission allows it, and road test to feel the problem ourselves. Fluid that's dark and smells burnt tells a different story than fluid that's simply low. Many newer transmissions have no dipstick, so checking the level properly takes the right procedure.

From there we can tell you whether you're looking at a minor fix, an internal repair or a replacement, and what each one costs. If the transmission is worth saving, we'll say so. If it isn't, we'll say that too.

FAQ

Questions we hear a lot

Still not sure? Call 403-454-7500 and ask. It's free to ask.

What are the first signs of transmission failure?

The early signs are usually a delay when shifting into drive or reverse, slipping (revs rise without matching acceleration), harsh or late shifts, a shudder at steady speed and a burning smell. Fluid leaks and a check engine light often come along too. Get it checked when you first notice any of these. Early problems are more likely to have a smaller fix.

Can a slipping transmission be fixed?

Often, yes. Slipping can come from low or degraded fluid, a faulty sensor or solenoid, a software problem or internal wear on clutches and bands. The first few are repairable at a fraction of the cost of a replacement. Internal wear usually means a bigger repair. A proper diagnosis tells you which one you have.

Is it safe to drive with a slipping transmission?

Not for long. Slipping makes heat, and heat wears the transmission faster, so a repairable problem can become a replacement. It's also a safety issue if the car hesitates while you're merging onto Deerfoot or pulling into traffic. Drive gently and as little as possible until it's inspected.

Why does my car take a few seconds to go into drive?

Delayed engagement is commonly caused by low transmission fluid, worn internal seals, a clogged filter or a valve body or solenoid problem. A short delay on a very cold morning can be normal while the fluid is thick. If the delay happens when the car is warm, or it's getting longer, have it checked before it starts slipping.
