Engine Tune-Up in Calgary
New plugs, clean filters and a check of the parts that keep fuel and air flowing properly. Done when your manufacturer says it's due, not on a made-up schedule.
A modern engine tune-up replaces the parts that wear out on a schedule: spark plugs, the engine air filter and the fuel filter. At our Calgary shop we also examine the fuel injectors and test the PCV valve. Most cars need plugs somewhere between 50,000 and 160,000 km, depending on the plug type. Your owner's manual has the exact interval.
Tune-ups used to mean adjusting the timing and the carburetor every year. Modern engines handle most of that themselves, so a tune-up today is about replacing the parts that wear and checking the ones that clog. Skip it long enough, though, and you'll feel it, especially on a cold Calgary morning when a tired engine has to start at -25.
Our tune-up package covers spark plugs, the fuel and air filters, an examination of the fuel injectors and a test of the PCV valve. We follow the manufacturer's tune-up recommendations for your car, and we keep that schedule on hand, so you're not paying for parts that still have plenty of life left.
What's in our tune-up
Each part on this list affects how cleanly your engine burns fuel. When one of them is worn or blocked, the others can't make up for it.
- Spark plugs replaced. Worn plugs make a weaker spark, which leads to misfires, rough idle and hard starts.
- Engine air filter replaced. A dirty filter chokes airflow. Calgary's dust and gravel roads load filters up faster than you'd think.
- Fuel filter replaced where your vehicle has a serviceable one. Many newer cars have it inside the tank as a long-life part.
- Fuel injectors examined for leaks and poor spray that cause misfires and wasted fuel.
- PCV valve tested. A stuck valve can cause oil leaks, sludge and a rough idle.
Signs your engine is due
Mileage is the main guide, but your car will usually drop hints. Fuel economy creeps down. The engine takes an extra second or two to fire on cold mornings. It idles rough at red lights or hesitates when you merge onto Stoney Trail. Sometimes the check engine light comes on with a misfire code.
Stalling and sputtering have a short list of usual causes: fuel delivery problems, worn spark plugs and blockages in the fuel or air system. A tune-up fixes some of these. If the cause is something else, like a weak fuel pump or a vacuum leak, our diagnosis will find it, and we'll tell you before you spend money on parts that won't help.
How often you actually need one
It depends on the engine and the plugs. Older copper plugs might last 30,000 to 50,000 km. The iridium and platinum plugs in most modern cars often go 100,000 km or more. Air filters need attention more often, and more often still if you drive a lot of gravel. Your owner's manual is the authority here. Bring it in, or just bring the car, and we'll look up the schedule for your exact engine.

Questions we hear a lot
Still not sure? Call 403-454-7500 and ask. It's free to ask.
Do modern cars still need tune-ups?
Yes, just less often than older cars did. You no longer need timing adjustments, but spark plugs, air filters and fuel filters still wear out on a schedule, and injectors and the PCV valve still need checking. Skipping these usually shows up as worse fuel economy, rough running and harder cold starts. Your owner's manual lists the intervals.
How do I know if my car needs a tune-up?
Common signs are a rough idle, hesitation when you accelerate, lower fuel economy, hard starts (especially in the cold), stalling and a check engine light with a misfire code. If you're past the spark plug interval in your owner's manual, it's due even if the car still feels fine. Plugs wear gradually, so the drop in performance is easy to miss.
Will a tune-up improve my gas mileage?
If worn plugs, a clogged air filter or a leaky injector were hurting combustion, yes, you'll often notice better mileage afterward. If those parts were still in good shape, a tune-up won't magically add range. Tire pressure, winter idling and short trips affect Calgary fuel economy a lot too, and we'll mention it if any of those look like the bigger factor.
What's the difference between a tune-up and an oil change?
An oil change replaces the engine oil and filter, and you need one every several thousand kilometres. A tune-up replaces ignition and fuel system parts like spark plugs and filters, and it's due much less often. Our oil change package includes a multi-point inspection that can flag when a tune-up is getting close.
