Heater & defroster repair

Car heater and defroster repair in Calgary

No heat in a Calgary winter is more than uncomfortable. We find out why and fix it.

Quick answer

A car heater that blows cold usually traces back to low coolant, a stuck thermostat, a clogged heater core, or a blower or blend door fault. Wow Tire & Auto Repair in NE Calgary checks coolant temperature, hoses, the pressure cap and thermostat, pressure tests the cooling system, and tests the controls and blower to find the cause.

On a minus 30 morning, a heater that blows lukewarm air is miserable. A defroster that can't clear the windshield is dangerous. Our Calgary shop treats both as safety repairs, because you can't drive safely if you can't see out.

Your heater runs on engine heat. Hot coolant flows from the engine through a small radiator behind the dash, called the heater core, and the blower pushes air across it. That means most no-heat problems are really cooling system problems, and we check that system from end to end.

Common heater and defroster problems

Watch your temperature gauge when it happens. A gauge that reads low points to a different cause than one that sits at normal.

  • The cabin never really warms up
  • Heat comes and goes, or only works while driving
  • Air blows cold even when the engine is warm
  • The defroster is slow or doesn't clear the glass
  • Weak airflow at full fan, or the fan only works on some speeds
  • A sweet smell or a greasy film on the inside of the windshield

Why there's no heat

We start with the simple, cheap checks and work toward the bigger ones:

  • Low coolant: from a leak in a hose, the radiator, the water pump or the heater core. Low coolant can also overheat the engine, so don't ignore it.
  • A thermostat stuck open: the engine never reaches full temperature, so the heater stays lukewarm. Your temperature gauge reading low is a clue.
  • A clogged heater core: coolant breaks down with age and turns corrosive, leaving deposits that block flow through the core.
  • Air trapped in the cooling system, often after a repair or a coolant top-up.
  • A blend door or actuator that's stuck, or a failed control.
  • A blower motor or resistor that's failing.

Your defroster is a safety system

In Calgary, a working defroster isn't optional. Frost on the inside of the glass, fog when the car fills up with people, and slush freezing on the windshield all happen on the same morning. If your defroster can't keep up, you're driving with a partial view of the road.

The defroster needs heat, airflow and dry air. Heat comes from the cooling system. Airflow comes from the blower and a clean cabin filter. Dry air comes from the A/C compressor, which many cars run automatically on the defrost setting. A problem with any of those slows down how fast the glass clears.

What to expect

How it goes at the shop

  1. Check controls and blower

We test the heater controls, blend doors and blower at every fan speed.

  2. Check the cooling system

We check coolant level and strength, engine temperature, hoses, the pressure cap and the thermostat.

  3. Pressure test

We pressure test the cooling system to find leaks, including at the heater core.

  4. Quote and repair

We explain what failed and give you a price before any work starts.

  5. Confirm heat and defrost

We check the vent temperature and make sure the defroster clears the glass before you pick up the car.

FAQ

Questions we hear a lot

Still not sure? Call 403-454-7500 and ask. It's free to ask.

Why is my car heater blowing cold air?

Low coolant and a thermostat stuck open are the two most common reasons. A clogged heater core, air in the cooling system, a stuck blend door or a failed control can also cause it. If your temperature gauge sits lower than normal, suspect the thermostat. If you're adding coolant often, there's a leak to find.

How do I know if my heater core is bad?

Common signs are a sweet syrupy smell in the cabin, a greasy fog on the inside of the windshield, damp carpet on the passenger side, or coolant that keeps going down with no visible leak under the car. A clogged core shows up as weak heat even though the engine is fully warm. A cooling system pressure test helps confirm it.

Is it safe to drive without a working heater?

In a Calgary winter, not really. Without heat, the defroster can't keep the windshield clear, and you lose visibility. No heat can also mean low coolant, which risks overheating the engine. If your heater quits, get it checked before you're caught in a cold snap.

Why does my defroster take so long to clear the windshield?

A slow defroster usually means not enough heat, not enough airflow or not enough dry air. Low coolant or a weak thermostat cuts the heat. A clogged cabin filter or failing blower cuts airflow. A non-working A/C compressor means the air stays humid. We check all three.

Can a bad thermostat cause no heat?

Yes. A thermostat stuck open lets coolant flow through the radiator all the time, so the engine runs cooler than it should and the heater only gets lukewarm. It's especially noticeable in cold weather. A thermostat is a fairly inexpensive part, and replacing it often brings the heat right back.
