Hybrid & EV service

Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Service in Calgary

No oil changes doesn't mean no maintenance. Hybrids and EVs still need tires, brakes, suspension work and a healthy 12-volt battery, and we handle all of it.

Quick answer

Hybrids and electric vehicles still need regular maintenance: tires, brakes, wheel alignment, suspension, A/C service, the 12-volt battery and routine inspections. Our NE Calgary shop services hybrid and electric vehicles of all makes for this everyday work. We don't repair high-voltage battery packs. For that, or for anything under factory warranty, your dealer is the right call.

If you drive a hybrid or an EV in Calgary, you've probably noticed that maintenance doesn't stop just because you've stopped buying gas. EVs skip oil changes and spark plugs, but they still ride on tires, stop with brakes and depend on a small 12-volt battery to wake the whole car up.

We service hybrid and electric vehicles at our shop at 404 40 Ave NE. The work we do on them is the everyday stuff: tires, brakes, suspension, alignment, A/C and the 12-volt battery, plus inspections. It's the same honest approach we take with any car, with a free quote before we start.

What hybrids and EVs still need

The list is shorter than for a gas car, but it isn't empty.

  • Tires: EVs are heavy and deliver torque instantly, so tires can wear faster than on a comparable gas car. Rotation and correct pressure matter, and so do winter tires in Calgary.
  • Brakes: regenerative braking means the pads see less use, but calipers and slide pins can seize from road salt and lack of use. Inspections still matter.
  • Wheel alignment and suspension: battery weight and Calgary potholes are hard on both.
  • 12-volt battery: it powers the computers that start the car. When it's weak, a full high-voltage pack won't help you.
  • A/C and heating: many EVs and hybrids use the climate system to manage battery temperature too.
  • Cabin air filter and coolant: most hybrids and EVs have cooling loops for the engine, battery or electronics, and those have service intervals in the owner's manual.

The 12-volt battery catches people out

This is the one that surprises EV and hybrid owners most. Your car has a big high-voltage battery for driving and a small 12-volt battery that runs the locks, screens and control modules. If the 12-volt is weak, the car may not turn on at all, even with plenty of range showing in the app.

Calgary cold makes it worse, just like on a gas car. If your hybrid or EV is a few years old and hasn't had the 12-volt tested, have it checked before winter.

What we don't do

We don't repair or replace high-voltage battery packs, and we don't do work on the high-voltage drive system. If your car shows a high-voltage system warning, or the issue is covered under the manufacturer's battery warranty, take it to your dealer. We'll tell you if something we find during an inspection points that way.

FAQ

Questions we hear a lot

Can a regular mechanic work on a hybrid or electric car?

For most maintenance, yes. Tires, brakes, suspension, alignment, A/C and the 12-volt battery work much like they do on any other car. High-voltage battery and drive system repairs need specialized training and equipment, and many are covered by long manufacturer warranties, so those usually go to the dealer. We handle the everyday maintenance and tell you when something belongs at the dealer.

What maintenance does an electric car need?

Less than a gas car, but some. Plan on tire rotations and pressure checks, brake inspections, cabin air filter changes, wheel alignment, suspension checks, A/C service, a 12-volt battery test and whatever coolant service your owner's manual lists for the battery and electronics. EVs skip oil changes, spark plugs and exhaust work entirely.

Do EVs wear out tires faster?

Often, yes. EVs are heavier than similar gas cars and deliver full torque instantly, which wears tread faster, especially if you accelerate hard. Regular rotation and correct pressure help a lot. In Calgary, winter tires are still the right call on an EV. All-wheel drive and traction control help you get moving, but they don't help you stop or turn on ice.

Why won't my hybrid start when the battery is charged?

Usually it's the 12-volt battery, not the hybrid battery. The small 12-volt battery powers the computers that start the hybrid system, and if it's weak the car won't turn on even though the main pack is fine. Cold weather and long periods parked make this more likely. A 12-volt test will tell you quickly.
